Beautiful Creatures has made its Australian box office debut at the top of this weekend's chart.

The romantic fantasy movie - which features a cast including Viola Davis, Emma Thompson, Alice Englert and Jeremy Irons - took Au$1.15 million across 228 screens on its opening weekend.

Josh Duhamel's Safe Haven drops one place to second, while Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence's Silver Linings Playbook holds third position in the chart.

There are two further new entries on this week's chart. Arnold Schwarzenegger's comeback film The Last Stand debuts in seventh place, and Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away just makes the top ten.

The box office chart for the weekend of February 21 to 24 (all figures are in Australian dollars):
