Guillermo del Toro's Mama may be turned into a franchise by Universal Pictures.

The horror movie starring Jessica Chastain has so far made $89 million from a $15 million budget, and is said to be in the early stages of financing at least one sequel.

Universal Pictures President of International David Kosse told Screen Daily: "We think there's potential for a Mama franchise. We'd like to do another one.

"But those conversations are in the early stages. Mama is the first of this type of model that we've had enormous success with so there are more opportunities for this kind of film."
