Jason Clarke has signed on for a role in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

The upcoming sequel to 2011's Rise of the Planet of the Apes will be directed by Matt Reeves (Cloverfield, Let Me In), who replaces Rupert Wyatt.

Clarke, who most recently appeared in Kathryn Bigelow's Oscar-nominated Zero Dark Thirty, will play an unspecified role in the second film, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes has been rewritten by The Wolverine scribe Mark Bomback, after Scott Z Burns (Contagion) had previously worked on the script alongside the original film's writers Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver.

James Franco, who starred in the first film, is reportedly unlikely to appear in the sequel.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes will be released on May 23, 2014.
