If I were the people who fronted the money “The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones” (the first of what they’re hoping is a new franchise, of course), I’d be very nervous right about now given how badly “Beautiful Creatures” did last week at the box office. That movie actually featured some very good reviews (way, way better reviews than “Twilight” ever had), and it still ended up in sixth place in its debut, beaten out by, well, every other movie that opened in the same week. From what I can tell, “Beautiful Creatures” and “The Mortal Instruments” are almost the same exact property — both are based on a popular Young Adult book series, featuring a spunky female lead, magic, and the supernatural. Basically, “Twilight 2.0″. “The Mortal Instruments” better hope that the fans of their books turn out the way “Beautiful Creatures’” fans, well, didn’t. Then again, »
