The found footage genre, when done right, can revitalize a genre with the opportunities afforded by its particularly unique way of unraveling a story.  Just as the original The Blair Witch Project added a new spin to the traditional horror story, Josh Trank’s Chronicle added a new wrinkle to the superhero genre and Matt Reeves’s Cloverfield made us reconsider how we experience a gigantic monster attack on a major metropolitan area. The style clearly has value when it can be used cleverly and when Oren Peli reimagined the haunted house story with the original Paranormal Activity in 2007, the idea had promise for the first time in over a decade.
