Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann reprise their roles as bickering married couple Pete and Debbie from Knocked Up (2007), in Judd Apatow's sort-of sequel This is 40.

As in the first film, Rudd's role is closely aligned with Apatow himself - Mann is Apatow's real-life wife - and the couple's real children Maude and Iris Apatow have expanded comedic roles as Pete and Debbie's daughters.

"I knew it was a fictional story, it wasn't some kind of biopic," Rudd told Digital Spy, when asked about the challenge of playing his director. "So I didn't feel like I had the same kinds of pressure as, say, Daniel Day-Lewis felt when he was playing Abraham Lincoln."

Asked about the decision not to bring back Seth Rogen and Katherine Heigl, who were the lead characters of Knocked Up, Apatow explained that he wanted the audience to focus on Pete and Debbie's marriage.
