Nicholas Hoult is set to star in a big-screen adaptation of Birdsong.

The actor will play the protagonist of Sebastian Faulk's novel of the same name, a young Wwi army officer who falls in love with an older married woman, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes helmer Rupert Wyatt has written the screenplay for the new version, which he will also produce alongside Alan Moloney (Haywire).

In a statement, Wyatt described Hoult as "a fearless young actor" whose "great weight, depth and range... allow us to explore this timeless story of a boy broken by a tragic love affair and what it means for young men to experience the real horror of war".

Eddie Redmayne and Clémence Poésy starred in a BBC adaptation of Birdsong last year.
