So nearly every critic on earth hated your movie? Well if you're Identity Thief director Seth Gordon, that shouldn't matter at all. The comedy starring Melissa McCarthy and Jason Bateman scored a rough 24% on Rotten Tomatoes but made $11.2 million on Friday, easily besting fellow new release Side Effects and taking over the #1 spot at the box office. The Hollywood Reporter estimates a $34.8 million weekend for the road trip movie, a better opening than McCarthy's smash hit Bridesmaids and Bateman and Gordon's previous team-up Horrible Bosses. It will also probably be the biggest opening of 2013, besting Mama's $28.8 million-- two very big victories for Universal Pictures. As for SIde Effects, the final theatrical release from Steven Soderbergh, it made $3 million on Friday and is on its way to a $10 million weekend-- obviously much smaller potatoes, and nothing compared to Soderbergh's own Magic Mike, but not too bad for an R-rated psychological thriller »
