Jeremy Renner has been cast in the lead role in Kill the Messenger.

The Avengers star will play journalist Gary Webb in the real-life thriller, reports Deadline.

Renner in Bourne Legacy

Webb became the target of a smear campaign by the CIA after publishing his three-part Dark Alliance report, which investigated the smuggling of crack cocaine into Los Angeles by the CIA-backed Nicaraguan Contra rebels.

The journalist's career was destroyed, leading him to commit suicide in 2004. Many of his claims have since been corroborated.

Michael Cuesta (Homeland, Dexter) will direct from a screenplay by Peter Landesman based on Webb's Dark Alliance and Nick Schou's Kill the Messenger.

Renner was most recently seen in Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters.

Production on Kill the Messenger is scheduled to begin in the summer once Renner has finished shooting David O Russell's untitled 1980s drama.
