Tom Hardy is teaming up with “Safe House” director Daniel Espinosa on an adaptation of Tom Rob Smith’s period set serial killer novel “Child 44″. Variety says Hardy would play “a disgraced lawyer who is dispatched to investigate a series of child murders” in the story’s Stalin-era Soviet Union. Curiously, this differs a bit with the book’s official synopsis, which focuses on a Soviet State security agent name Leo Demidov, the hero of a trilogy of novels written by Smith. The plot, though, is about the same, with a series of child murders that Demidov must solve. Tough guy screenwriter Richard Price (“Clockers”, and more recently, TV’s “The Wire” and “NYC 22″) will adapt the novel for Summit and Lionsgate. “Child 44″ will have to wait until Hardy finishes up the Dennis Lehane-penned crime drama “Animal Rescue” with Noomi Rapace, though.
