There's many reasons I could give for why Robert Rodriguez is such a cult figure among movie nerds, but here's the biggest: his first movie was El Mariachi.  El Mariachi was an action film he managed to shoot on a pithy 7,000 dollar budget that turned out to be pretty damn good, thus helping jumpstart the concept of independent film.  He later followed it up with the larger-scale Desperado and Once Upon A Time In Mexico, and now he may be working on a fourth. »
