Michael Winner dies: 'Death Wish' director was 77

Michael Winner has passed away in his London home after an illness, his family has revealed to the Associated Press. The British director was 77.

Best known for his three "Death Wish" films starring Charles Bronson, Winner also made a name for himself as a restaurant critic for the Sunday Times. Interestingly enough, "Death Wish" marked the debuts of actors Jeff Goldblum and Denzel Washington, who as AP points out play "Freak 1" and "Alley Mugger." Winner made a total of 30 movies and worked with actors like Faye Dunaway and Marlon Brando.

Winner is survived by his wife, Geraldine, who he met in 1957 and married in 2011. She describes him as "a wonderful man, brilliant, funny and generous. A light has gone out in my life."
