After a solid but relatively restrained opener (as far as this show goes, anyway), this week's episode kicked things into high gear... and then stole the car. It also firmed up a theme that's always been hanging out in the wings but looks as though it may emerge as a central conflict of the season: namely, can poor people get ahead without resorting to crime? It's a big question, and spells big trouble for Fiona and Lip as they both try to provide for their younger siblings.

Speaking of Fiona (Emmy Rossum), she wakes up at the episode's start in a panic: she just handed their property tax money to a club manager for a crack at promoting a night.
