Writer-director Jeff Nichols follows up on Take Shelter, one of 2011's most astoundingly self-assured, original tales, with Mud and the Palme d'Or nominated film gets its first trailer and it seems we're in for another tense, thrilling ride in this Southern coming-of-age tale.

Matthew McConaughey, who is continuing his winning streak into 2013, stars as the titular drifter and fugitive, whom two teenagers Ellis (The Tree of Life's Tye Sheridan) and Neckbone (Jacob Lofland) stumble upon on a deserted beach and then get swept up by his romantic yarns and his quest to reunite with is love Juniper (Reese Witherspoon).

The first trailer offers a chilling look at what happens when the boys start to help Mud evade the police and come to think they know him as they get in over their heads.

Mud is scheduled to come out in limited release this April. Check out the first trailer after the jump.
