"Perks of Being a Wallflower" joins usual suspects "Argo," "Beasts of the Southern Wild," "Life of Pi," "Lincoln," and "Silver Linings Playbook" as contenders for the 25th annual USC Libraries Scripter awards. Usually five films are nominated, but this year a tie resulted in six nods. The Scripter awards are unique for recognizing both the screenwriters of a film and the authors of the original source material from which the film is adapted. They are chosen by a select group of writers, filmmakers, producers. critics, and academics, including me. The winners often--but not always--match up with the eventual adapted screenplay Oscar winner. Recent winners "The Descendants," "The Social Network," "Slumdog Millionaire" and "No Country for Old Men" did, but "Up in the Air" and "Children of Men" did not.
