The two acclaimed films climb at the box office again after controversy, awards buzz and a wider cinematic release

Keep your eyes on two movies that have already been on release in North America for some time. Zero Dark Thirty surged to the top of the charts in its fourth weekend and ruled box office on $24m. Silver Linings Playbook has been active for nine weekends and has just edged back into the top 10.

Let's start with Zero Dark Thirty. Until this weekend Kathryn Bigelow's haunting procedural about the hunt for Osama bin Laden had only played in 60 theatres. The movie's Us distributor, Columbia Pictures, expanded it into 2,937 sites and the movie showed what it can do. Jessica Chastain's triumph in the best dramatic actress Golden Globe category will keep interest high in a movie that has already attracted lots of attention because of the controversy surrounding its depiction of CIA torture. »
