It wasn't much of a surprise to learn that "Game of Thrones" was the most pirated TV show of 2012. The top movie on the list, though? Probably not what you'd expect.

That, uh, honor belongs not to "The Avengers" or "The Hunger Games" or "The Dark Knight Rises" but to the high-school comedy "Project X." The found-footage movie was downloaded more than 8.7 million times, according to TorrentFreak -- a surprise given its middling box-office performance ($54.7 million in the United States and about $101 million worldwide).  

"Project X" beat out much bigger hits like "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol" (8.5 million downloads) and "The Dark Knight Rises" (8.2 million). Here are the 10 most pirated movies of the year, based on TorrentFreak's data:
