The film adaptation of the beloved serial comic Dick Tracy went through production hell and ultimately wound up on the shoulders of Warren Beatty as both its director and leading man. Whether the film would have panned out better narratively under a more experienced director is possible, but the visual aesthetic of the film, the impressive cast of Beatty, Al Pacino, Madonna, Dustin Hoffman, William Forsythe, Mandy Patinkin, Dick Van Dyke, Glenne Headly, James Caan, and the celebration of the source material as campy dimestore fiction make Dick Tracy a fun romp from start to finish and suggest Beatty was the right man for the job. The makeup work of the film alone makes it a memorable achievement in the annals of filmmaking (so much so that it won an Oscar), and it makes you wonder why we don’t see movies making such creative leaps anymore.
