Rapper Fat Joe -- real name Joseph Cartagena -- pleaded guilty Thursday (Dec. 20) in New Jersey to failing to pay taxes on nearly $3 million in income in 2007 and 2008.
According to the Associated Press, the "What's Luv" artist entered his plea in a New Jersey federal court, since some of the companies he earned money from are incorporated in the state.
It was initially alleged that Cartagena failed to pay income taxes for four years -- 2007 through 2010 -- and his sentencing set for April 3 will apparently take that into account. Prosecutors say the government's total loss for that time period is $718,038.
In court Thursday, U.S. Magistrate Cathy Waldor asks if Cartagena understands the charges he's facing, to which a noticeably slimmed-down Fat Joe replies, "I super-understand it."
Joe's attorney Jeffrey Lichtman tells E! News, "We have been trying to correct this for almost a year now. We got his tax »
