When it comes to cinematic technology Peter Jackson has always been a resourceful filmmaker, keen to push the boundaries of what is possible on screen. From his early films the creation of a visual landscape has been of paramount importance. His early films such as Heavenly Creatures and The Frighteners are perfect examples of this. With The Hobbit digital technology has advanced so much since The Lord of the Rings and Weta have grown to become one of the foremost effects studios in the business.

We caught up with Joe Letteri last week to talk about the evolution of visual effects from the beginning of the first Lord of the Rings film, through Avatar and Rise of the Planet of the Apes. We touch on the art of performance capture in The Hobbit and how 48fps affects the work he and his team do.
