Peter Jackson's first part of The Hobbit trilogy topped the box office this weekend with a stellar $84.7 million debut. The highest December opening in history, Warner Bros.' fantasy averaged $20,958 from 4,045 theaters. IMAX accounted for a big $10.1 million from its 326 venues, averaging $30,982. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Breakdown: Friday: $37.5 million. Saturday: $28.1 million. Sunday: $19.1 million. The film starring Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen, Cate Blanchett and a massive amount of others, easily topped I Am Legend's previous record-holding total of $77.2 million grossed back on December 14th, 2007 and of course James Cameron's uber-giant Avatar just behind that at $77.02 million. »
