What’s the technological singularity? A term is coined by Vernor Vinge, the science fiction author, in 1983 and refers to a hypothetical event occurring when computers develop their own intelligence qualitatively different and harder to predict.

The Terminator franchise’s doomsday depiction of the emergence of an A.I. that becomes a super-intelligence – - Skynet is the most well-known cultural touchstone for this trans-human hypothesis.

Oscar-winning cinematographer Wally Pfister seems to be keen on the idea of the singularity. His directorial debut, a project titled Transcendence has the plot that will have the theory of the singularity at its core.

It was revealed back in October that his long-time director Christopher Nolan was on board to executive produce Transcendence and that Johnny Depp was in talks to star in the film. The screenplay is written by newcomer Jack Paglen.
