Tom Cruise is back on his dystopia-porn, Yankee hat-wearing sci-fi schtick last seen in 2005's War of the Worlds. In Oblivion, the second feature from Tron: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski, Earth was attacked 60 years ago (by whom? Morgan Freeman in a zany getup, maybe?) and Cruise is a member of earth's "mop-up crew." (Yes, he's Wall-e.) He goes by the name of Jack, not unlike Jack Reacher! It feels like Cruise serves up at least three cliché action movie lines he's delivered before, but we're not writing it off quite yet. Minority Report seemed way worse than this, and Minority Report was somehow pretty great. »
