The new Silent Night starts off strong. We get a killer Santa with a streamlined look that's pretty damned creepy, and a nice kill that's just graphic enough to make your skin crawl.

This isn't just a retread, you think, as this update of the 80's exploitation slasher gets rolling. The problem is, the film still has another 85 minutes to lose its lead.

Instead of the original's tracking of its Santa through being an orphan and his hard life, this new incarnation follows a simpler story, taking place all in the few days before Christmas. While this may make the story a little easier to swallow, it loses whatever sympathy you might have had for the old tale. Here, instead of almost rooting for the kid, we're supposed to root for the local Sheriff's Department.
