BBC’s acclaimed television series Call the Midwife quickly garnered almost as many fans in the U.S. as fellow British period TV show Downton Abbey.
Based on the best-selling memoirs of Jennifer Worth, Call the Midwife follows Jenny Lee (Jessica Raine, The Woman in Black), a new midwife in poverty-stricken 1950s East London. Jenny is part of an order of nursing nuns who provide the poorest expectant mothers the best possible care and often at home.
Through their cases, the midwives learn about their patients, including a woman on her 25th pregnancy and a prostitute who gets pregnant at 15 years old. And like in Downton Abbey, this East London community is on the brink of huge social change.
Narrated by Vanessa Redgrave (Anonymous), the TV show also stars Pam Ferris (The Raven), Helen George »
