Nonostante le ultime dichiarazioni abbiano lasciato intendere che il franchise intraprenderà nuove strade (più spazio, meno Terra, più robot, meno umani), a quanto pare Transformers 4 non sarà un reboot. In una nuova intervista, il regista Michael Bay ha spiegato che il quarto capitolo proseguirà la storia del precedente episodio; dunque non un reboot ma un vero e proprio sequel. In una nota a margine, inoltre, sembra che il quarto film non sarà l'ultimo episodio del franchise (né tantomeno l'ultimo diretto da Bay, come precedentemente annunciato). L'attore Glenn Morshower ha infatti rivelato che Steven Spielberg lo ha avvicinato per riprendere il suo ruolo da "generale" nel quarto e quinto capitolo della serie le cui riprese dovrebbero partire a dicembre. Se i due film saranno girati insieme o se Bay veramente realizzerà anche il quinto capitolo, lo scopriremo solo nei prossimi mesi. »
