Roman Polanski è determinato a portare sul grande schermo, in lingua francese, l’opera teatrale di David Ives, Venus in Fur, nella quale reciteranno la moglie del regista Emmanuelle Seigner e Louis Garrel. «Aspettavo da molto tempo l’occasione di fare un film con mia moglie», spiega il Polanski, «Leggendo Venus in Fur ho capito che il momento era arrivato». Il film segue le vicende di uno scrittore-regista di una nuova commedia, che al telefono si lamenta dei difetti di tutte le attrici che si sono presentate alla sua audizione durante il giorno. Ma improvvisamente, all’ultimo momento, entra un attrice che sembra impersonare tutti i difetti da lui elencati fino al momento prima. Eppure, nel corso dei 90 minuti successivi, gli equilibri si spostano e vedono prevalere l’attrice in una sorta di dominio totale sul regista.
