L’adattamento cinematografico di Beautiful Boy, è in lavorazione da più di quattro anni. Tratto dal romanzo di David Sheff ‘Beautiful Boy: A Father’s Journey Through His Son’s Addiction‘ racconta la storia di una famiglia che cerca di affrontare il problema della tossicodipendenza per la metanfetamina, del figlio. Il titolo si riferisce alla canzone di John Lennon, Beautiful Boy, scritta per il figlio Sean nel 1980.
Dopo aver intervistato l’ex componente dei Beatles, Sheff fu così ispirato dalla famiglia di Lennon che decise di crearsene una sua. Nel 2005 scrisse per il New York Times un articolo su come la sua famiglia affrontò il problema della droga del figlio, tre anni più tardi il pezzo fu trasformato in un libro. Nello stesso anno uscì un libro di memorie scritto dal figlio Nic, Tweak: Growing Up on Methamphetamines, in cui raccontò la sua storia dal suo punto di vista. »
