Questa estate la Paramount Pictures non ha praticamente nessuna tentpole da presentare al pubblico estivo americano, a causa dei problemi sorti durante le lavorazioni di diversi film che lo studio aveva in programmazione in questi mesi, vedi Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, G.I. Joe: La Vendetta e World War Z, la cui uscita è stata rimandata. Lo studio notando poi la recente fama delle varie proprietà basate/ispirate sul popolare detective di Sir Conan Doyle, Sherlock Holmes, ovvero i film con Robert Downey Jr., la miniserie della BBC di Moffat, e prossimamente la serie televisiva della CBS con Jonny Lee Miller, ha pensato di rispolverare una sua vecchia proprietà degli anni ottanta, ovvero Piramide di Paura.
Nel 1985 Chris Columbus scrisse la sceneggiatura del film, ambientato in epoca vittoriana, che racconta la storia del primo incontro tra Sherlock Holmes e John Watson, studenti nello stesso collegio, che verranno coinvolti nella risoluzione di »
