Si è spento a 83 anni Mel Stuart, regista noto soprattutto per il cult del 1971 Willy Wonka e la Fabbrica di Cioccolato, adattamento del romanzo per ragazzi di Roald Dahl con Gene Wilder. Secondo quanto riporta l'Associated Press, la causa del decesso è stata un cancro.
Regista di documentari premiato dalla critica, Stuart diresse film come Man Ray - the Prophet of the Avant-Garde e Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, oltre a una serie dedicata alle campagne elettorali americane del 1960, 1964 e 1968. Negli anni ha vinto diversi premi Emmy, un Peabody e una nomination all'Oscar (per il documentario Four Days in November). Tra i suoi lungometraggi di fiction anche Se è martedì deve essere il Belgio, Amo Mia Moglie, Una donna in attesa di divorzio.
