Venerdì sera a Santa Monica all’Aero Theatre, poco prima della proiezione di Shining di Stanley Kubrick, il personale ha annunciato che al film sarebbe seguita una proiezione segreta. Poco dopo la fine dei titoli di coda del film di Kubrick, gli spettatori hanno scoperto che avrebbero visto in anteprima il nuovo film di Paul Thomas Anderson, The Master, in formato 70mm.
La pellicola verrà presentata sia alla Mostra Internazionale d’Arte Cinematografica di Venezia, che al Toronto Film Festival ai primi di settembre, ma potrebbe essere proiettata anche a Telluride e al Fantastic Fest, dove nel 2007 fu proiettato a sorpresa Il petroliere. The Master è uno dei film più attesi della stagione cinematografica, non solo per la presenza degli artisti coinvolti nella pellicola ma anche per la storia narrata da Anderson, che ricorda l’ascesa del fondatore di Scientology, L. Ron Hubbard.
