The Avengers tops the UK box office chart for the third week

UK box office top ten and analysis for the weekend of Friday 12th - Sunday 14th May 2012...

Having crossed the $1 billion mark at the global box office this past weekend (and in doing so, overtaking The Dark Knight as the highest-grossing comic book movie of all-time), Marvel's The Avengers - a.k.a. Avengers Assemble - continues to dominate the UK box office for the third week in a row. The Joss Whedon-directed Marvel team-up added another £4.17m over the Friday-Sunday period, pushing the film beyond the £40m mark and exceeding the entire UK runs of Marvel superhero predecessors such as Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2, Spider-Man 3, Iron Man, Iron Man 2, The Incredible Hulk, Captain America: The First Avenger and Thor. By next weekend it should be pushing the The Dark Knight's £48.6m and it's only a matter of time before The Avengers becomes the UK's highest-grossing superhero movie.
