Anche se non è ancora ben chiaro cosa succederà nel Cavaliere Oscuro - Il Ritorno, sappiamo che la storia sarà ambientata 8 anni dopo quella del Cavaliere Oscuro; dai vari trailer possiamo capire che la minaccia che Batman si troverà ad affrontare sarà di non poco conto e saranno tutti gli abitanti di Gotham a soffrire in senso letterale. Bruce Wayne compreso.
Per le ovvie motivazioni commerciali, alla pellicola di Nolan sarà molto probabilmente posto un rating PG-13 anche se, stando alle parole di Christian Bale e della produttrice e consorte di Christopher Nolan, Emma Thomas, il film spingerà al limite la violenza consentita da questa categorizzazione della MPAA.
