The 2011 romantic drama W.E. represents the feature film directorial debut of Madonna.
Co-written by Madonna and Alek Keshishian (Madonna: Truth or Dare), the film looks at two different love stories intertweined across the decades: The love affair of King Edward VIII (James D’Arcy, Age of Heroes) and American divorcée Wallis Simpson (Andrea Riseborough, Happy-Go-Lucky) in the 1930s, and a modern romance between a married New York woman (Abbie Cornish, Sucker Punch) and a Russian security guard (Oscar Isaac, Drive) at Sothebys Auction House.
Though it received a handful of honors, including an Academy Award nomination for Best Achievement in Costume Design and a Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song (Motion Picture) for Madonna’s song “Masterpiece,” W.E. didn’t make much of an impression on critics or audiences. »
