Shrek Forever After is bringing in the green after ending Iron Man 2's reign as America's box office champion.

The animated 3D movie took in $71.3 million (£44.5 million) over the weekend to debut at number one.

The big film - the final Shrek movie - fell well short of the $100 million (£62.5 million) studio bosses had anticipated.

Iron Man 2 slipped to number two with $26.6 million (£16.6 million). The superhero sequel has earned $251.3 million to date.

Russell Crowe's Robin Hood also fell a spot to three, while new comedy MacGruber debuted in fifth place.
