Marty (Colin Farrell) è uno scrittore in difficoltà che sogna di finire la sceneggiatura di un film intitolato Seven Psychopats. Tutto quello che gli serve è un po' di concentrazione e ispirazione.
Billy (Sam Rockwell) è un attore disoccupato e ladro a tempo perso di cani, ma è anche il migliore amico di Marty e lo vorrebbe aiutare con ogni mezzo necessario.
