E’ stato l’anno dei grandi temi, al Sundance Film Festival. L’evento del cinema indie americano fondato da Robert Redford si è concluso con la vittoria di Beasts of the Southern Wild di Benh Zietlin, racconto ecologico tra sogno e realtà che vede una ragazzina di sei anni cercare la madre mentre un male misterioso sta uccidendo suo padre e altrettanto misteriose variazioni climatiche hanno risvegliato dai ghiacci una razza di antiche bestie note come aurochs. Il migliore documentario è invece The House I Live In di Eugene Jarecki, sulla fallimentare lotta alla droga in America.
Tra le proposte internazionali sono invece stati premiati il film Violeta Went to Heaven, biopic della cantate cilena Violeta Parra diretto da Andrés Wood, e il documentario israeliano The Law in These Parts, in cui il regista Ra’anan Alexandrowicz illustra il sistema di leggi in vigore nei territori occupati della Palestina.
