Ewan McGregor is to play Edward VIII in Madonna's movie about the king's relationship with American socialite Wallis Simpson.

The monarch abdicated in 1936 so he could marry Wallis when her divorce was finalised months later.

Vera Farmiga, nominated for an Oscar for her role in last year's Up in the Air, will portray Simpson in the film, which is titled W.E.

Abbie Cornish, most recently seen in Bright Star, is to play a present-day character who is obsessed with Wallis "in a parallel time line reminiscent of Julie & Julia", reports ScreenDaily.

Shakespeare In Love's David Parfitt is producing with former Miramax executive Colin Vaines.

As I reported earlier, Madonna will direct and is writing the screenplay with Alek Keshishian, who directed her 1991 Truth or Dare documentary about her Blond Ambition tour.

Doctor Who actor David Tennant had been linked to the title role in tabloid reports which he later dismissed as fabrication. »
