Given that Dan Brown's novel "The Lost Symbol" — the third installment in the "Da Vinci Code" series — sold more than 1 million copies in its first day of printing, it was pretty much inevitable that Columbia Pictures was going to adapt the story into a third installment of its 'Da Vinci Code' feature film franchise.

According to Variety, the studio is indeed moving forward with The Lost Symbol, and has hired writer Steven Knight (Shutter Island) to adapt Brown's latest thriller.

The third film once again features the fictional, mystery-solving Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon in a story taking place over a 12-hour period in Washington DC.
