James Cameron's Avatar has surpassed the $2 billion mark at the international box office - just days after it broke the record held by the director's 1997 drama Titanic.

Cameron's 3D sci-fi spectacular smashed the $1.843 billion record last weekend (23-24Jan10), and became the best-selling international release of all time.

According to executives at 20th Century Fox, Avatar has grossed $2.039 billion after seven weekends at the top of the charts in the U.S.

The film is an early Oscar favourite ahead of Tuesday's nominations - 12 years after Titanic won gold. The historical drama picked up 14 nominations and won 11 awards including best picture, director and editing for Cameron in 1998.
