A few days ago, New York Magazine’s Vulture blog briefly interviewed director Oliver Hirschbiegel and asked him what he thought of the countless YouTube clips from his 2004 film Downfall.  The reinterpretations, also called memes, reuse the same dramatic bunker scene but replace the subtitles with their own and typically comment on current events (there were a lot criticizing Avatar before it was released).  Who hasn’t seen one of these by now?

Hirschbiegel said, “Someone sends me the links every time there’s a new one. I think I’ve seen about 145 of them… Many times the lines are so funny, I laugh out loud, and I’m laughing about the scene that I staged myself! You couldn’t get a better compliment as a director.” For more from the filmmaker, check out their interview.

The film is quite good, so if you haven’t had a chance to see it, »
