Veteran actress Joan Collins is pleased Madonna escaped handing over a large financial settlement in her divorce from Guy Ritchie - because she is convinced successful women should not have to support their ex-husbands.

The former couple announced their split in October and the divorce was settled last month.

Although details of the case were not made public, it is believed Ritchie walked away without a large payoff.

And Collins, who has been divorced four times, insists a wealthy woman like Madonna should not be forced to hand over any of her hard-earned cash to a former partner.

She says, "Even though Madonna has zillions, I didn't think she should give half to Guy - she made it all herself, as I did myself. I never asked for or received money from any of my husbands. I despise men who think they deserve money from a woman. The material gal did not marry a material guy - lucky for her and he's showing a great example to other men who greedily demand money from their wealthier exes."
