Revered British political pundit John Sergeant has quit dance show Strictly Come Dancing because it would be a shambles if he won the talent contest.

The BBC correspondent has been savaged by the hit show's judges, but the public keeps voting for him and keeping him in the competition.

After announcing his decision to walk away from the show on Wednesday, Sergeant said, "It was always my intention to have fun on the show and I was hoping to stay in as long as possible. The trouble is that there is now a real danger that I might win the competition. Even for me, that would be a joke too far."

Judges dubbed clumsy Sergeant "the dancing pig" and declared he was the show's worst-ever celebrity wannabe.

Top judge Len Goodman, who also fronts America's Dancing With The Stars show recently said Sergeant's popularity "makes a nonsense of the show".
