Dame Helen Mirren was reduced to a nervous wreck when she finally came face to face with British monarch Queen Elizabeth II.

The actress, who won an Oscar for her portrayal of the royal in 2006 movie The Queen, was invited to meet Her Majesty at the Royal Ascot horse races in England earlier this year.

And she insists she was so nervous about the encounter, she became a gibbering mess.

She tells Britain's GQ magazine, "It was a strange experience because the Queen invited me there and I ended up sitting between Sheikh (Mohammed) of Dubai and the Duke of Edinburgh. And I staggered out at the end with my knees absolutely knocking.

"The Queen invited us all outside to watch the racing. I think it was just a gesture to say, 'It's okay. We're cool about the film (The Queen).

"As I left, I stood up and made this stumbling nauseating little speech about what an honour it had all been and I went on and on and made a complete and utter f***king pleb (idiot) of myself.

"But, she took it on board very graciously and then off I went - to have a large glass of wine and recover."
