Latest: Actor Morgan Freeman has been released from a Tennessee hospital - just days after he was involved in a serious weekend car crash.

Freeman and a female passenger had to be cut free from the wreckage and airlifted to the Regional Medical Center (The Med) in Memphis, Tennessee on Sunday night, after the actor lost control of his vehicle on the highway near his home in Charleston, Mississippi.

Kathy Stringer, a spokeswoman for The Med, said Freeman was discharged on Thursday after undergoing surgery, but gave no further details.

The 71-year-old Oscar winner was said to be "in good spirits" on Monday when he arrived at the hospital before his surgery took place, repairing a broken arm, broken elbow and shoulder damage.

He will be required to wear a neck brace for six to eight months, according to his attorney and business partner Bull Luckett.

Luckett adds: "The doctors have said it will be six months to a year before he plays golf again. He hates that."

Freeman's passenger, Demaris Meyer - whose relationship to the actor is unknown - has reportedly suffered only minor injuries in the accident. »
