COLOGNE -- Two cautionary tales of war, Ken Loach's Festival de Cannes winner The Wind That Shakes the Barley and Bosnian director Jasmila Zbanic's Berlin Golden Bear winner Grbavica, are among the films the European Film Academy has chosen to compete for this year's European Film Awards. The EFA on Monday announced its rather long "shortlist" of 49 European films now in the running for the 2006 awards. The 1,700 film professionals who make up the EFA will now select nominees from this list. High-profile productions on the shortlist include Pedro Almodovar's Volver, Michel Gondry's The Science of Sleep and Michael Winterbottom's The Road to Guantanamo.
