This weekend's boxoffice ended up as a close horse race between a seasoned veteran and a young filly -- 20th Century Fox's Man on Fire, starring Denzel Washington and helmed by Tony Scott, and Sony's 13 Going on 30, which marked Jennifer Garner's first starring role -- with both films finishing strong and the former winning by a nose. Man opened with an estimated $23 million, and 13 had an estimated $22 million. Together the two films set an April record, as there has never been two pictures that grossed or opened to more than $20 million each on the same weekend during the month. The debut of Man, a New Regency co-production, marked a personal best for Washington for a three-day weekend, besting the $22.6 million generated by Warner Bros. Pictures' Training Day. The two films played to different audience demographics, with the R-rated action-thriller Man playing older and more male, while the PG-13 rated romantic comedy 13, from Revolution Studios, attracted a younger female audience.
