Scarlett Johansson, who is earning critical praise for her work in both Sofia Coppola's Lost in Translation and Peter Webber's Girl With a Pearl Earring, is in final negotiations for a lead role in the Weitz brothers' Synergy at Universal Pictures. Johansson joins Dennis Quaid and Topher Grace in the project, which is being produced by Chris Weitz and Paul Weitz's studio-based Depth of Field. Synergy stars Quaid as a magazine advertising exec who finds himself working for a young, fresh-out-of-business-school boss (Grace) following a corporate merger. The two wind up forming a friendship that is upset when the young boss has an affair with the daughter (Johansson) of Quaid's character.
