Miramax Films has prebought from Pathe the North American and Latin American distribution rights to Bend It Like Beckham director Gurinder Chadha's untitled Bollywood musical. Based on Jane Austen's classic novel Pride and Prejudice, the film will star Martin Henderson (The Ring) and Bollywood superstar Aishwarya Rai and will be set in India, London and Los Angeles. It is being produced by Deepak Nayar and is set to begin production in July. "This promises to be a spectacular musical and visual production," Miramax co-chairman Harvey Weinstein said. "We're thrilled to be in business with Pathe and a director as talented as Gurinder, who I've admired for some time." Writer-director Chadha, whose Beckham has already earned more than $11 million domestically, hopes the film will resonate with American audiences unfamiliar with the genre. "My intention with this film is to introduce Bollywood cinema with a British twist to all the towns and cities and the heart of people across America," he said. The untitled Bollywood musical was brought into Miramax by execs Agnes Mentre, Colin Vaines and Maeva Gatineau.
