Leading directors Jane Campion (The Piano) and Gurinder Chadha (Bend It Like Beckham) are among several top-flight names backing a new British project to boost the number of women directors in the movie industry. U.K. industry body Women in Film and Television has teamed up with United International Pictures, the overseas distribution giant, to launch a program called Directing Change. Set to launch Thursday, the plan seeks to give fledgling British women directors the opportunity to work alongside an experienced and internationally recognized film director.
